How many times had we rounded Casey’s Corner of Main Street, absently listening to the ragtime cheerfully drifting from a piano just out of view? The answer was all too often — without pausing a moment to discover the man behind the music. Many Magic Kingdom regulars consider Jim, the master pianist of Main Street, to be a rather hidden treasure they’d never consider missing. Finally, on a recent fall trip to the parks, we joined the ranks of those regulars.
A Disney cast member since the ‘70s, Jim has long been entertaining generations of families with his ability to barrel through classic tunes with blinding speed. When we came upon his little corner of Americana, we were lucky to have Jim mostly to ourselves. The kids busted out their dance moves immediately — which appeared to amuse the piano player as he watched in the mirror above his keyboard.
After you’ve worked up an appetite tapping your toes to Jim, stop in at Casey’s Corner restaurant for one of their signature chili-cheese dogs or a brat on a pretzel roll. We’ve grabbed quick hot dogs for the kids many evenings and eaten them outside under the hallmark red-and-white striped umbrellas. The chow is in keeping with the restaurant’s old-timey baseball theme, inspired by Disney’s animated short “Casey at the Bat”.
Location: Find Casey’s Corner in the Main Street USA section of Magic Kingdom Park, Walt Disney World Resort. There is no guarantee you will be treated to a performance by Jim, but a pianist will play several times daily for 20 minutes at a time. Check your Times Guide for the schedule.
